We had the dim sum basket to start which was lovely.  But it became disappointing.  Plain rice, well there’s nothing to say about that, it is what it is.   The seabass dish steamed with ginger was lovely.  Kung po king prawns I thought were bland and the prawns did not have a nice texture.  And then the so called stir fried vegetables turned out to be virtually all cabbage with a bit of brocolli and were soggy and tasteless yet we asked for them in garlic and ginger.  We were not asked mid meal if our meal was OK, but we called them to change the vegetables and they did, so that was good.  But, they came back just as soggy but at least had garlic and ginger on them.  I couldn’t eat them though and I love my vegetables. I cannot eat soggy vegetables.  I expected bok choi or something more chinese and crunchy.  The waitress/possible manageress? came over and asked us if they were OK second time and I said they were soggy and not stir fried as they had obviously been par steamed or par boiled before going into the wok.  She disagreed and said they were stir fried and that they may be different to other restaurants.  Yes they certainly are and they were horrible but I didn’t appreciate the rudeness or curtness in her attitude.  And they definitely were NOT stir fried, and wouldnt be soggy in the two minutes they took to redo them.

So, I cannot say all the food was bad because half of it was OK, but not worth the prices they charge overall.  There are far better Chinese/asian restaurants in the Southend area (as you will see from my over 100 restaurant reviews in Essex on this site) and I regret trying this one as the rudeness of service did not stop there but I will not go into it.

There are so many good restaurants in the area, of all types, so will stick to those.

wings chinese restaurant southend essex

This is without doubt the best Chinese restaurant in the Southend on Sea area and around, as far as we are concerned. The interior is not plush, but comfortable and well spread out giving you plenty of space. Booths, tables for two and long tables ensure it accommodates from single people to larger groups.

Service is friendly and efficient, the menu is really varied, with lots of traditional Chinese dishes and the food is fabulous. The chef uses fresh produce to create a wide range of flavours, and there are ducks hanging in the window, which is always a good sign of a Chinese restaurant.

We really enjoy their noodle soups, particularly the udon duck and pork, and we have enjoyed Singapore noodles, kung po prawns (delicious, large, juicy prawns), and chicken in black bean/chicken with cashew nuts. All delightful!

I would strongly recommend this restaurant although we don’t want everyone flocking there as it is small and if it gets too busy, we wont get in! ?

Soya leigh salmon main course

This boasts oriental fusion food in contemporary surroundings, and it does deliver just that. We have only been the once so far, but really enjoyed it and will be back. They also say that they use fresh ingredients and use less MSG (Monosodium Glutamates), which is good, although we always ask for no MSG when we have Chinese or Thai food.

The service was great – friendly and efficient – but then we were the only people in there at that time, as it hadn’t been open that long and it was mid week.

We had salmon Teriyaki, and it was gorgeous – fresh and a huge portion of quality fish.  The scallops were cooked with ginger and spring onion and were a hearty portion and delicious and the vegetables and noodles were fresh and good quality.

We will definitely return!

Pearl Dragon salmon ginger and spring onion

 We have been here quite a few times over the last few years, and it is consistent in service and food, so it is currently our favourite Chinese restaurant for this area.

Although the interior is not new and plush, it is comfortable and, being a large restaurant with an upstairs area, it is great for large groups. Tables are nicely placed, so you have plenty of room between your neighbouring diners.

The staff are professional, albeit a little serious and they do not have conversation, but the Manager there makes up for this, as he is a very sociable man, with good customer service skills. They have plenty of repeat diners, and it is easy to see why.

Our favourites dishes are:

Salmon with ginger and spring onion (really lovely salmon)

Hot and sour soup (full of vegetables and prawns)

Crispy Aromatic Duck with pancakes

There is an extensive menu, so lots to choose from.

febuary 2008 gold coast

We have been to the Gold Coast in Southend on Sea a few times, but we have found the service not up to the standards of neighbouring Chinese restaurants, so we have not been here for a while.  

I did enjoy the food though, and this particular evening, we had a thai green chicken curry, which was very authentic, a very good broccoli and garlic dish and Kung Po King Prawns.  

This is not a bad choice for food, and certainly not the worst in the area all round.
