If you are in the Southend on sea area, then it may be worth a trip to this Indian/Bangladeshi restaurant, if curry is your thing. They have just celebrated their pearl (30 year) anniversary, so they must be doing something right! We have been there numerous times now, and have had nothing but good food, whether it’s Ceylon, Dansak, Madras, Jalfrezi, or their garlic chicken – lovely fresh tasting sauces and quality Tandoori king prawns and juicy chicken tikka is used. Side dishes are generous, and we have found that the food isn’t too salty, which I particularly don’t like. The naan breads are perfect too, being not too doughy, yet not too crispy and thin – just right.

The restaurant itself is cosy, with booth areas for privacy, and jolly Indian music adds to the ambience. The staff and management are very friendly and will take time to listen to and please their customers.

the cinnamon lounge indian restaurant southend on sea essex

This is quite a funky, contemporary Indian restaurant, on Southchurch Road in Southend on sea. Its position I think lets it down as I believe it would be more suited to a busier, modern area such as Leigh on sea, with its bright interior and bar area.

In any case, we went here midweek and there were a few other customers. The service was polite and efficient and the food was good (we had a chicken tikka dansak, aloo gobi, garlic naan and other dishes). The only thing that lets it down, I believe, is that the setup somehow made it very noisy – we could hear every word every table was saying, so it wasn’t as relaxing as it could be.

Keralam fish curry and prawns southend essex

This restaurant has been in Southend on Sea for years, yet I had never tried it before. On first impressions, the restaurant looked modern and comfortable, but it was not furnished, decorated or tidy to a high standard, but acceptable. The toilet was cold and left a bit to be desired.

The menu is very varied, and offers a huge range of Southern Indian dishes. Although we go to a lot of Indian restaurants, being fairly new to this Southern cuisine, we chose from seafood dishes, as this is what we know

Southern Indian cuisine are renowned for. The restaurant was full, which was a good sign, but unfortunately, this meant a very long wait for our food (about half an hour for our starters, and another half hour for our mains) so this let the service down.

We had the Kingfish curry, which was the best dish, and we ate all of that. The chilli prawns were unusually sweet with tamarind, and as this was not an ingredient shown in the description, it was disappointing so we left that. The Malabar potatoes were nice and oil free. We…

…had an unusual rice flour batter called Velaya Appam, which was recommended by the waiter to accompany our fish curry, but it turned out to be rather damp and tasteless, so we ordered a garlic naan. The naan was ok, but I have had many better and didn’t really enjoy it.

Overall, I would say that other diners appeared to be enjoying their food, and as there is such a big choice, I am sure that there would be some good dishes to try, but we didn’t really enjoy ours, and it was far too salty (had to drink 2 pints of water overnight) and didn’t really agree with my digestion, so I will not be back again.

This area of Essex has so many Indian restaurants, it is hard to know which to go to, but I would try this one again, as I do like to go to different places.

Maharaja chicken chat benfleet

I have been going to this restaurant on and off for the last 16 years or so, and it is always consistent in its food and service. They offer a good choice of dishes, and even have some fish and lower fat dishes, so there is something for everyone. Unlike some Indian restaurant, the food is seldom oily, which is great, as I don’t like my food swimming in oil. I have tried lots of dishes, such as Dansak, Jalfrezi, Bhuna, and they are all good. They have disco nights on a Thursday, which are quite a good laugh and the atmosphere is great with the DJ and dancing. I have been with many friends and family and we have all enjoyed ourselves. They are well known and I would recommend them.

I prefer to order my dishes, but they do also offer a buffet, which is very popular.

Railway lamb at Rajpoot Indian

I have been here twice now. The first time: The food was really nice, but too salty and that was the only issue really. It is a nice venue with different ambience and surroundings depending on where you sit. A far more Indian menu than most with the traditional ‘Indian’ dishes one would expect in a general Indian. We had the ‘Railway lamb’ which was hearty and generous with lovely spices, potatoes and spinach. Also the peri peri chicken was spicy and fairy hot and tangy. The aloo gobi (potatoes and cauliflower) were not the best we have had but fresh and tasty. The cucumber raitha was very good and fresh as well as Pilau rice and a well cooked, delicious garlic naan bread. The cobra beers were nice and cold.

The service was a little slow and we were asked to sit and wait for a table as the guy was too busy, which we have not had before, but overall we enjoyed it.

We have now been to the Masa restaurant 3 times. The first time, over a year ago, we were not impressed, but we did return to give it another try, and it was lovely.

The Masa Indian Restaurant is called fine Indian Dining, and it is. The menu has all the favourites, but a wonderful range of North and South Indian delights that are not offered elsewhere. The ingredients are fresh and there is something to suit all tastes, with a very nice choice of fish dishes as well as vegetarian, chicken, lamb and seafood.

The staff are professional, polite and friendly, and the restaurant is contemporary in design, with comfy seating and plenty of room between tables.

I couldn’t say our favourite dishes, as we have only touched on the menu – although the fish curries are fantastic. If

King Prawns at the Shagor

I have only visited this restaurant the once and it was nice without being outstanding. The king prawns were juicy in our curry, and everything fresh and tasty.

It was quite busy when we went, with a mix of customers, and it seemed to be doing quite well for the area. The restaurant is fairly large, with dividers between the tables, so you have plenty of space between diners.

Indian Summer dansak and Peshwari Naan

Well, back in February I was saying that the Viceroy in Hadleigh, Essex, was my favourite Indian restaurant, but the Viceroy has now become my 2nd favourite, as the ‘Indian Summer’ appeared along the A13 in Westcliff-on-Sea.  I can now say that the ‘Indian summer’ is the best restaurant in Southend, and possibly Essex, as I have not had better anywhere else!

This restaurant is consistent and we have visited at least 15 times now so we have plenty of experience to go on!

Indian Summer does not offer buffets and special cheap deals, and we are glad they don’t, as they concentrate on good quality food instead. What they do offer is fantastic value for very good food. They use fresh ingredients and great seafood/meat, so everything tastes as it should without the flavours being ‘covered’ in hot spice and oil, as some Indian restaurants do. We love prawns, chicken and lamb in our curries, and it is always really nice. The naan breads are fresh and light, the raitha yoghurt is a refreshing accompaniment and the dansak actually has whole lentils in it, giving it a wonderful texture.

The staff are polite and friendly, and the restaurant is very comfortable, cosy and modern and they play Indian music – what more could you want?
